I delivered my pitch to an audience at MFA Design Thesis Forum at SVA Theater in New York in April 2015.

From ideation to execution, the process was daunting to finish under just one year but I learnt quite a lot.

The thesis year was quite rigorous and demanding with me working on several areas of design such as branding, UI/UX design, motion graphics, illustration, typography, lettering, book design etc. On top of researching and producing content for the project, I was also constantly reaching out to people and interviewing them. The idea would have been fleshed out much better had I worked on each area for a longer time. Nonetheless, I am quite proud of the end result and what I was able to produce in a short timeframe.

Defining a visual system for a coherent experience

Type enthusiasts are designers and artists. It was imperative that a cohesive visual system be created to keep the platform consistent. I created a booklet that documents the system and principles for Type Aakriti. I also used my skills to create sample merchandise to kickstart the online store.

The thesis pitchbook of Type Aakriti documents the entirety of the project including visual system and business opportunity.

An e-commerce store to support the website and bring the work of numerous Indic typographers and artists to the world.

The second part of the venture is an online store that sells exclusive merchandise created by typographers and artists from India. They will earn a commission from the sale of the merchandise on the store. The plan is to begin with merchandise

and offer font sales in the future. I created some sample Devanagari lettering work to kickstart the online store and I reached to some Indic calligraphy artists to sell their items.

The accompanying online store that sells Indic type merchandise would help Type Aakriti to sustain the platform.

Research and Strategy

Once I had the idea for the product, I reached out to numerous luminaries as well as students who are doing significant work in the field of Indic Typography. I met Dan Rhatigan at Monotype NY Office to discuss about the current realm. I conducted user reviews with my initial prototypes and gathered opinions from experts to help strategize around the core idea.

A common theme emerged from all the research that there is a growing interest in Indic typography and a community hungry for resources concerning the writing systems of India. One of the

early ideas was to create a social platform. However, given that Typography is a niche with limited audience, this idea didn’t perform well.

So, I went ahead with creating an online store that goes along with a repository of articles to sell merchandise made by artists. Type Aakriti would become a platform for Indic type enthusiasts to have a discussion around typography and share their creativity.

After multiple iterations, I made this layout to show articles. The user can message the author directly from the article page.

By exploring my interest in typography, I sought to make a business proposition while telling a story about Indic typography.

For the thesis at MFA Design at SVA, we were asked to come up with something that we are passionate about that can be transformed into a business idea. I went through a lot of different ideas which failed before I chose to go with typography.

One of the hardest part of the project was to make it a viable business idea that can be ready for the market. My thesis advisor, John Carlin, helped me in this regard and I learnt so much during the whole process about turning an idea into a business.

The logotype was designed from scratch in both Latin and Devanagari keeping them visually similar for brand recognition

India’s typographic diversity is complex for the outside world to comprehend.

One of the problems I faced during this project was that not many in the world know about the typographic diversity of India. India has the world's second highest number of languages and most of these languages have their own writing systems. According to the People’s Linguistic Survey of India, there are 780 languages and 66 scripts.

Over a period of three months, I storyboarded and developed a motion graphics piece to convey this idea in 1 minute. After watching the presentation at the SVA Thesis Forum, people came up to me and said that they learnt information they didn’t know about India before that.

This motion graphics piece I made introduces the uniqueness of India in terms of typographic diversity
